3d mailer for AMP
So this mailer above has some rough patches. I have discovered that scoring chip board is harder that it appears and does not fold well. So I am trying a new approach. “Card Stock”… This will be a trifold and the green section on the right is perforated so it can detach and be mailed back with a check in it. There is some double sided tape inside the top right (Green Panel). Also the little door that is on the yellow side is were the Guitar pick is stored. Would love some feedback….

Ayn Rand Book Covers
Here are my covers. I spent all day changing them a bit, (they are better now!), so that is why the second in each pair is a bit different. The first of each has krungthep. The 2nd has courier with helvetica neue for the small text. Comments are welcome. -Kate

Heard today on NPR - sending weird objects through the mail
Just heard an funny class-related segment on OPB this morning. It was a story on “Talk of the Nation” about the weirdest objects people have received through the mail that have NOT been inside a box or and envelope. A couple highlights were:
- an inflatable palm tree (arrived still inflated)
- a phone (a caller who said a guy she had dated kept trying to call her, but she refused his calls, so he sent her an actual phone in the mail with a note attached that said “plug it in”)
- a goose (arrived on Christmas eve, and had just been shot the night before, they cooked it up for Christmas!)
The a synopsis of the story is postered here but it doesn’t really include many details, although you can read some listeners comments. It looks like they will be posting the audio of the show in a few hours. Have a listen for some really “out of the box” ideas!!

Sketches for SCRAP
I’ve chosen SCRAP (School & Community Reuse Action Project), which is essentially the arts and crafts version of the Rebuilding Center, as my nonprofit. The program takes in donations of everything from paper, duct tape, buttons, notions, fabric and wallpaper samples to small metal and wood scraps, ceramic and vinyl tiles, and carpet samples and sells them cheap to schools and community groups as well as the public at its Creative Reuse Center at 3901A N. Williams.
Its mission is to educate the public on the value of reuse. Much of its inventory comes from area businesses, although it accepts donations from the public. And a number of area foundations provide much of its funding.
SCRAP sponsors art shows and offers numerous classes by area artists and volunteers on how to create art from their recycled materials.
The inventory is constantly changing, which is part of the fun. I learned about it last year when my sister-in-law took her kids there to find supplies to make their class valentines. She spent less than 20 bucks and they came home with a bundle of art supplies that have lasted a year. My nephew, then 5, was inspired to make 3-D sculptures of his classmates’ first initials for his Valentines, using cardboard, linoleum, ceramic tiles and various metal doodads he found.
My main idea on most of these entails including inventory from SCRAP in a box that the recipient can use to make his or her own piece of art. When I was an editor at the Trib, I was always getting these kinds of boxes sent to me. The ones I actually paid attention to were the ones that gave me something to do. Who can resist free art supplies and the challenge to make your own art?
I’d include glue in all of them, maybe even a mini glue gun if the funding was available.
Concepts for 1&2 is pretty simple: Turning trash into treasure.
#3: Asking for donations by offering either a paper bag or better yet, one of those reusable bags everybody is offering now with the SCRAP info on it
#4: Asking for company donations to help kids bring their dreams to life via art.
#5: Tying SCRAP into Christmas by offering some blank cards and some doodads to decorate them.
#6: Again tying SCRAP into Christmas by offering some supplies to make Christmas gifts.
In all of these, I’d include info on what SCRAP offers and a list of upcoming events.

Mailer Sketches for Growing Gardens
I chose Growing Gardens as well, focusing on ideas that would get people to volunteer to help with their “Youth Grow” kids garden club or donate/raise money. I like the idea of tying in healthy eating, because even though this organization is about educating kids about how food is grown and providing gardens to low income families, their goal is really about getting kids to make healthy food choices.
Therefore, lots of my ideas revolve around the humble zucchini, a veggie that is very easy to grow, extremely prolific, recognizable, and in my opinion, highly underrated. There is also something a bit more comical about a zucchini compared with say, a tomato.
I’ve also posted a PDF here if that is easier to review.
